This is a statue of Ignaz Semmelweis, an Hungarian physician who lived from 1 July 1818 until 13 August 1865. He discovered, around 1850, that mortality rates from child-bed fever in hospitals in the range of 20 to 30 percent were caused by physicians spreading deadly germs.
